Girls Night Out by kmkibble75 Girls Night Out by kmkibble75
Here we have Catwoman, Poison Ivy, and Harley Quinn just chilling out after a successful night out on the town. I didn't really go for any specific costumes of theirs, but rather just took bits and pieces from whichever ones came to mind. This piece took me about 5 hours, which is a huge improvement from the 2-3 weeks it would have taken me a year or two ago. Because the colors for it would be so complex, I think I'm going to shy away from them for now and just leave this as a pencil sketch.

Any comments or critiques would be appreciated, so feel free to let fly. Thanks!

This is a good picture overall, just missing some main parts. This should be colored, so its easier to read which character is which, and so the bodies don't look as clustered together. Its anatomy is well drawn, but the lines are sketchy, which doesn't exactly fit this style. The expression on the one with really short hair is slightly off, meaning it doesn't look the best, but its still good, none the less. This picture gives off a real cute feel, despite some of its faults. Good job. I hope you don't mind this critique too much. Thank You.

Hi,

Great work on the composition! It's clear these three are just having a good time and enjoying each other's company. Each have their own attitudes which really bring them to life.

As for a suggestion, I'd say push the characters' facial expressions further. In particular, focus in on the eyes and eyebrows. All three have fairly standard and similar looking eyes and eyebrows. Looking at Harley Quinn, consider that with such an extremely happy expression that her eyebrows would be very high, her eyes would be wide open and the nasolabial sulcus lines (s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/o…) would deepen. When you're working on expressions, you could make the expressions yourself in a mirror to see the effects it has on your own facial features or you could look up some references online. I like Catwoman the best in this drawing, but even with her the eyebrows could have a stronger expression. Poison Ivy has a very neutral expression - she seems glad just to be there, but not necessarily happy. Not sure if that was the intension ... but I'd suggest giving her a more specific expression because that would make her seem more involved in the situation (like the other two girls are) and make her emotions more clear to the audience.

Here are some tutorials that focus on expressions that might be helpful:

Thank you very much for taking the time to comment and to include all of those tutorials -- I'll be sure to put them to use. I did try to make Harley's eyes wider, but then she looked really insane -- and I know that's kind of her thing, but it didn't really fit what I was aiming for -- I didn't want her to look like the other two women should be concerned about her, you know? :-) I just have to trust myself to find a way to make it work next time.

Thank you again -- I really appreciate the How-Tos.

Hiya, here from ProjectComment ! ^^

I really like this piece, it's a cute, fun concept and I believe you've executed it well!  You did a nice job of conveying their personalities by use of expression and body language, it's masterfully done, and I think it's my favorite part of this piece!  The composition is also great, group pictures are difficult, but you've managed to have the girls take up space without eliminating too much negative space.

The anatomy is generally good, but there are a few hiccups.  Catwoman's torso is too long, her breasts should also be moved further up as well as closer to her right, and her butt should stick out a bit more.  Also, I think that Harley's breasts should also be moved farther up (assuming that where the black shirt she's wearing goes out is where her breasts are and it's not just loose fabric). Other than that, I didn't catch any more anatomy problems.

I think that the couch cushions that they're laying on should be de-cluttered and maybe replaced with a few small items. Since the girls are the main focus and are already detailed, I feel like it would be too much to make the background too complicated.  Lastly, I think there should be line indicating the top of the couch somewhere around Catwoman's armpit, since the perspective is from above.

In any case, this is great, keep up the fantastic work!! :aww:

Thank you so much for taking the time to comment. I really appreciate it.

I'm glad the composition and expressions/personalities worked -- the personality part is something I had in mind when I started out, since, at least to me, they all seem so different and that's part of what makes them work as a group.

I'll keep what you noted about Catwoman's torso in mind -- it does seem to be an area I sometimes have problems in, so I really need to work on that (especially when working digitally, where there's no real excuse for not erasing...)

Thank you again!
